By Paula HolzmanThe Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center plans to break ground tomorrow for the $206.5 million Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.
Construction of the 252,000-square-foot, five-story facility was delayed at the end of 2008 because of the economic downturn.
The current children's hospital is mainly on the seventh floor of the Derry Township medical center. The new, freestanding facility on the same campus will have more space dedicated to pediatric intensive care, as well as five operating rooms, a cardiac catheterization lab and an eight-bed surgical recovery area, according to the medical center's Web site.
Expanded parking and a new support-services building to accommodate the project will cost $43 million, according to the Web site.
Construction likely will begin in February 2010, with completion anticipated in fall 2012, the organization said.
