Motorola Droid: First impressions
By Andréa Maria Cecil
11/3/2009 - 11:40:23 AM

My demo Motorola Droid was sitting on my desk when I arrived to work this morning. Thank you, Verizon.

I've spent about three hours with the Droid; it's my first time using an Android device.

Below are my first impressions.

Hardware:

  • Feels heavy, sturdy, well-built;

  • design is very rectangular; doesn't look modern; and

  • slide-out keyboard has tiny keys, which work with my tiny hands, but might not for others.

Interface/operating system:

  • Very intuitive; barely a learning curve;

  • interface isn't as colorful or attractive as that of the iPhone; and

  • signing into Google account, setting up Exchange e-mail account was a breeze (although now I can't seem to access my Outlook, but that could be user error at this point).

And, of course, the pulsating red eye and the phone's computerized alien voice occasionally announcing its own name certainly appeals to the nerd in me.

But I have weeks worth of testing ahead, so stay tuned.

What do you think about the Droid?

I'm just sorry I got the Samsung Omnia from Verizon last month. I should have waited! That phone is DAWG.... but it was the closest thing to an iphone I could get from Verizon... last month!

Resolved my Exchange issue -- didn't enter the correct server name. Like I said, user error.

If my 1st gen iPhone crapped out today, I'd strongly consider getting a Droid. It's the first phone that's come out that seems to be coming close to competing with the iPhone on several different levels. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call it better - yet - but I think Apple is now aware that the wolf's at the door.
