Ahold, the parent of Giant Food Stores, is building a 162,000-square-foot facility in Lower Allen Township to package beef and pork for its Pennsylvania and Maryland stores. In August, the company announced the facility that could create as many as 850 jobs next year.
The facility shift will gradually mean an end to meat cutting at Giant’s in-store meat counters, although they will remain for specialty items, the company said. Giant partnered with Kansas-based Vantage Foods US to operate the facility.
Ahold will receive $1.275 million in PA First Grants, and Vantage Foods will receive $360,000 in job training assistance, according to the governor’s office. Vantage is eligible for up to $1.7 million in Job Creation Tax Credits.
