Bill would streamline state contracting rules for steel
Jim T. RyanA bill working its way through the Pennsylvania legislature could help streamline contracting for public works projects by reducing paperwork for contractors to prove they're using steel products made in the U.S.
House Bill 1840 would direct the state Department of General Services to prepare a list of machinery and equipment that doesn't use acceptable levels of domestically made steel for the state to compare with those to be used by contractors, according to the House Republican Caucus.
"As we continue to look for ways to cut costs at the state level, this legislation is a step toward reducing administrative costs for both contractors and public agencies," said Rep. John Bear, the bill's author and a Republican representing Lancaster.
The bill received unanimous approval Tuesday in the House of Representatives and was moving to the Senate.
