If you're in business in Central Pa., you've probably heard about the various lists that the Business Journal publishes throughout the year. The Business Journal has a diligent and conscientious staff that seems to be always crunching some number or another. It also administers annual awards to the business community in conjunction with professional partners, such as the case with the annual "Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies" list – this with SF & Co., accountants to tabulate the financials.
To make a long story short, our firm (Select Services) was one of the honorees. To celebrate the winners, publisher Dave Schankweiler and his team held a breakfast at the Harrisburg Hilton this week.
The hall was packed by the 7:30 start time. There were almost no empty seats – we had 10 executives at our company table. The Business Journal team had purposefully held back the rankings to add suspense to the atmosphere as folks buzzed around the tables.
After Dave's opening remarks and sponsor acknowledgements, the keynote speaker, Michael Mitchell of Amelia's Grocery Outlets, took the stage to talk business and, more specifically, success. His review of Amelia's birth and growth was excellent, as was his insight into leadership principles.
After Mitchell, the countdown began in earnest, with very nice video/photo presentations of each award recipient floating across the screen as photos were being taken to one side of the stage. The event was fast-moving and the sponsors got great airtime – always a plus when plunking money down as a business.
Overall, I felt the event was very respectful and encouraging. To be in the company of such diverse year-over-year success stories was excellent enough; the keynote and presentations only added to that. Dare I say I'm already looking forward to 2013?
Kudos to the Central Penn Business Journal for bringing the business community together in a positive, uplifting venue. Keep it up, ladies and gentlemen.
