Two truck manufacturers – Lancaster Preferred Partners and The Reading Group – plan to close their Lancaster County factories that made bodies and parts for commercial trucks this fall, according to notices filed with the state Department of Labor and Industry.

Lancaster Preferred Partners is closing its factory at 2919 Old Tree Road in East Hempfield Township, the company said in the letter to the state. Layoffs of the company's 211 workers are set to begin Sept. 7. It did not specify a timeline to finalize the closing.

Plant management was not immediately available to comment on the reasons for the closure.

Workers at the company are represented by United Auto Workers Local 1612. UAW leaders did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment on the factory closure.

On the other side of the county, manufacturer The Reading Group is closing its Reading Truck Body factory at 1658 Dry Tavern Road in Brecknock Township. The factory closing will eliminate 69 jobs, and layoffs are expected to begin Sept. 8, according to the state.

The company did not respond to calls for comment.

Berks County-based Reading Group makes bodies and utility beds for commercial trucks produced by auto manufacturers such as Isuzu Commercial Truck of America and Ford Motor Co. Reading Group announced in March that it was reorganizing its business units. In June, it said it planned to sell its division that makes van bodies.
