Since 2005, the Pittsburgh-based parent company of Highmark Blue Shield in Cumberland County has been the official health insurance supplier of Team USA and the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC).
"Just like any other group customer who buys health insurance, Highmark worked with the U.S. Olympic Committee on a bid for its insurance business and was selected based upon our capabilities," said Highmark spokesman Leilyn Perri. What's unique about the relationship is Highmark's being able to use the official designation in its marketing.
"We're proud to be the health insurance supplier to the elite athletes of the nation, as well as millions of members right here at home," Perri said.
According to Highmark's website, the company insures approximately 1,000 elite athletes in summer, winter and paralympic sports each year, as well as more than 360 USOC employees. The athletes use their PPO Blue plan health insurance while training, competing and traveling within the U.S. and abroad.
The site says the program does not impact costs for Highmark members, as the USOC programs are self-funded and the USOC pays for the associated costs.
