A capital campaign kicked off in February 2010 to raise $2.8 million for a 6,000-square-foot expansion at the facility, which had been dealing with overcrowding. Pets were housed in the lobby, conference room, staff offices and hallways.
The expanded HSHA facility at 7790 Grayson Road includes an additional 3,000 square feet for animal housing, as well as intake counseling centers to discuss with pet owners alternatives to surrendering animals and a veterinary suite to offer medical services.
HSHA also has added a separate entrance to the facility to help prevent the spread of disease and an emergency triage unit. In addition, there is additional space for pet food bank storage to help needy pet owners and expanded office areas.
The nonprofit organization has been serving the community since 1911.
