Lancaster County led all Pennsylvania counties in new housing growth between April 2010 and July 2011, according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The county added 1,793 housing units, or 0.9 percent, over that 15-month span, pushing its housing stock to 204,747, the bureau said.

Cumberland County ranked fourth with 1,133 additional homes, followed by York County at No. 5 with 1,098. Cumberland came in at No. 2 for the highest percentage of growth at 1.1 percent.

Nationally, Pennsylvania ranked fifth in terms of total housing units with nearly 5.58 million, the bureau said. Twenty-eight counties in the commonwealth saw declines in housing over that period.

Housing unit estimates use building permits, mobile home shipments and estimates of housing unit loss.
