It is about 50 percent more than last year, when the company spent about $458 million, PPL said.

The company is expanding efforts to strengthen reliability and address aging infrastructure, and has been steadily increasing capital investments in recent years, according to a news release.

PPL spent about $290 million in 2009, the release stated.

PPL Electric Utilities, the subsidiary serving a 29-county area in Pennsylvania, has about 400 substations, 50,000 miles of power lines and nearly 1 million poles in its system, according to the release.

Shares of PPL are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PPL.
