Lancaster Press Building moves forward

The Lancaster Press Building will unveil a model apartment on Thursday, the first step in completing the $16 million renovation project.


The 90,000-square-foot building at the corner of North Prince and West Lemon streets in Lancaster is being renovated into 44 senior living apartments and a retail space, said Scott Miller, director of marketing for Garden Spot Village, in an email.

The city owns the property at 401 N. Prince St., which is being developed by Lancaster-based Drogaris Cos. as part of Lancaster Press Partners. Once the construction is complete, Garden Spot Village retirement community in Earl Township, Lancaster County, will own and operate it, he said.

The loft-style apartments are available for those 55 and older. Construction will begin on the remaining space in the building when 33 of the apartments are presold, he said. Once work begins, it should be complete within two years, he said.

Lancaster will construct a 245-space parking garage behind the building with 77 of those spaces dedicated to the apartment residents. A bridge will connect the parking garage to he press building, Miller said.

The six-story press building will feature a roof-top deck, outdoor gathering spaces, a fitness room and a monthly fee to cover all maintenance and repairs, he said. It's within walking distance of Lancaster Central Market, art galleries and downtown restaurants.

The model apartment will be shown at an invitation-only event from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. It will be open to the public beginning at 9 a.m. Friday.

Lancaster-based Tippetts/Weaver Architects Inc. designed the project. Wagman Construction Inc., based in Manchester Township, York County, is the general contractor.
