LGH’s incentive has influenced many employee decisions (and I’ve working with a number myself in the past).

This outstanding example of corporate citizenship has a lesson for all business principals throughout Central Pennsylvania — your employees are open to your participation in their housing decisions, and you have an opportunity to engender loyalty from day one by offering solutions that work.

Rideshare programs flourished and faded years ago, but companies that still offer them always get that extra kudos that make PR execs smile. I would contend that it’s in your best interests to consider a whole-housing program. Offer to help with costs if the employee can live within walking or bicycling distance. Offer mass-transit coupons (the transit companies will love you). Shoot for rideshare participation for those that must commute. I know many Lancaster residents who commute to downtown Harrisburg for work, and some network with other like commuters to set up ad-hoc rideshare arrangements anyway.

If a company makes it a point to be a partner with the employees in easing their housing and commute burdens, the loyalty and efficiency upside could be significant. If you know a company offering innovative ideas on this subject, U’d like to hear from you!
