The number of railroad accidents in Pennsylvania declined by 22 percent in 2007, according to data from the Federal Railroad Administration. Also, the number of train-related accidents across the U.S. declined for the third consecutive year, the administration reported.

The industry invested $9.4 billion last year in safety technology, maintenance and employee-training programs, according to a statement from Edward R. Hamberger, president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Railroads.

Over the past three decades, the rail industry has reduced accident rates by 70 percent and employee injury rates by more than 80 percent, Hamberger said.
