By Jessica Bair The boards of directors of Harrisburg-based PinnacleHealth and York Township-based WellSpan Health signed an agreement this week that
outlines a potential merger, the two health care organizations this afternoon
announced.
The agreement describes the creation of a new regional
health care organization governed by a board of directors that would include
representatives from both groups and from communities across the region. The
system would operate PinnacleHealth Hospitals, Gettysburg
Hospital and York Hospital.
Bruce Bartels, president of WellSpan Health, would become the
group's president and chief executive officer. Roger Longenderfer, president
and CEO of PinnacleHealth, would be the organization's executive vice president
and chief operating officer.
Board leaders and senior management will continue to discuss
the details of the merger - a conversation that began in March. The groups will
consider a final merger agreement early in 2010, which would require regulatory
review, the statement said. Under the agreement, either group can withdraw from
the discussions.
