By Eric Veronikis Exelon Corp. opened its gates to media yesterday at the
Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Londonderry
Township, Dauphin County.
Media Day was held in anticipation of the March 28 30th anniversary of the infamous partial meltdown inside the plant's Unit 2 reactor.
Chicago-based Exelon owns the Unit 1 reactor and cooling tower. Ohio-based FirstEnergy
Corp. owns Unit 2, which is no longer in use and will never be used again, said
Ralph J. DeSantis, Exelon spokesman.
Exelon representatives took media on a tour of some of the
plant facilities, which included a visit to the company's Control Room
Simulator. The simulator is an approximately $16 million replica of the control
rooms that are used to operate power plants on the island. Employees that work
in the control room are continuously trained in the simulator.
Safety was the focus of the tour. DeSantis said the 1979 accident
forever changed operations at nuclear power plants. Rigorous safety standards
are followed to ensure there will not be another accident, he said.
