The National Institutes of Health has awarded the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center a roughly $54 million, seven-year grant, one of the largest in the Derry Township organization’s history.
Hershey’s Department of Public Health Services will act as the data coordination center for AsthmaNet, a nationwide research coalition dedicated to clinical trials involving the malady.

"There was very stiff competition for this award. The fact that PHS in Penn State College of Medicine was the recipient confirms that it is one of the top academic medical centers in the world for the design, conduct and analysis of multi-center clinical trials in asthma,” said Professor Vernon Chinchilli, the department chairman.
The department anticipates hiring four people as part of the grant, spokesman Matthew G. Solovey said.
Hershey acted as the data coordination center for two efforts that preceded AsthmaNet, known as the Asthma Clinical Research Network and the Childhood Asthma Research and Education Network, so it will shift individuals from those projects to AsthmaNet, Solovey said.
