Description
Learn about bats from around the world up close and personal at this special public event brought to you by the North Museum of Natural History & Science. As a TV personality, conservation biologist, bat expert, author and Director of the Organization for Bat Conservation, Rob Mies participates in outreach across the country. At the event on November 17, he will speak about the benefits of bats, the need for conservation and what people can do to help these unique mammals. His message includes an invitation to step into the mysterious world of bats and explore their benefits, habitats, and nocturnal strategies. He will also debunk many of the myths surrounding these creatures, which often contribute to their less-than-popular reputation. His presentation includes viewing several different kinds of bats including a Big Brown Bat from North America and a demonstration of its high-pitched echolocation with a “bat detector” device. Audience members will also meet fruit bats from Africa and Asia as well as the largest bat in the world – the Gigantic Flying Fox Bat from Malaysia with a wingspan of six feet.
